The RE’s office returned my message about sperm washing at 7:05am this morning. Thankfully our alarm goes off at 7:00, so we weren’t TOO startled. They charge WAY more than we are willing to spend and since our #1 choice of donor is only available “unwashed” we are now back to the catalogs. Good thing we still have 2 months before we need the stuff.
To sum it up thus far:
choice #1= unwashed only
choice #2= CMV+
choice #3= schizophrenia in the family history
Thank goodness for the Internet. I can’t imagine doing all of this by mail and phone!
*Strawberry adds: We do have 3 other possible donors, with long profiles for one or two so far. Fortunately we’re not ‘SOL’ at this point, but it’s unfortunate we can’t go with our top choices. Oh well.
It’s so hard. With so much sperm, you’d think it would be a lot easier. We only have two criteria, Indian and Rh-, and we only have one choice.
Well that sucks. At least you have a little bit of time to work it out (and find someone even better?).
My KD has schizophrenia in his family history, and it scared me a little but I am sucking it up because the rest of the situation is so good. He and his wife (one of my best friends) just had a little girl in December. They had initially thought to adopt, but then looked into it more and the risk is actually pretty low. I can get the numbers from them if you want.
Hi starrhillgirl!
The reason we are concerned about the schizophrenia in that donor’s background is because Nutella already has schizophrenia in her own family background and we don’t want more than one instance of a second degree relative with it. If it wasn’t prevalent in Nutella’s family history, then I think we would still be considering that donor.

Oh, the donor drama. Our top two choices weren’t available. And we also had genetic issues we *really* needed to avoid: schizophrenia and other mental disorders on my side, alcoholism on my wife’s (we both hope to get pg with the same donor). So we finally called the sperm bank, told them roughly what we were looking for in terms of personality, and asked for recommendations. They pointed us to some great profiles…and now we have the cutest little monkey you ever did see. (check the blog for evidence)
I’m happy with the choice we ending up going with despite having had to cross out the others…I mean, I’ll be even happier if it works out 🙂
